Mumbai: The City that Never Sleeps

Tall skyscrapers, frenzied partying, architectural brilliance, and the never-ending Mumbai monsoon…that’s Mumbai for you! Mumbai is India’s commercial capital, its entertainment capital, and is famously known as the city that never sleeps.

Mumbai is India’s busiest and most-populous city, with the 2011 Census of India estimating that 12 million call it home.

This magnificent monument was built to commemorate the landing of King George V and Queen Mary at Apollo Bunder in Mumbai in 1911. It now welcomes tourists from all over the world, and stands tall in front of the famous Taj Mahal Hotel.

You can also take a carriage-ride around the area in quaint contraptions known as Victorias – horse-drawn carriages named for Britain’s second-longest reigning monarch. Though your Trabug smartphone can easily help you take a selfie or two, local photographers will be happy to click a picture for just 30 Indian rupees (USD 0.45).

A weekend getaway to the nearby Elephanta Caves is a great option. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Caves consist of some stunning Hindu and Buddhist religious sculptures, some of which are estimated to be nearly 1200 years old.

Explore your spiritual side

Hindu Temple in Mumbai

The city of Mumbai is also home to two extremely popular places of worship – the Siddhivinayak Temple, and the Haji Ali Dargah.

Hundreds of thousands of devotees visit the Siddhivinayak Temple daily in the hope that their prayers will come true. The temple is over 200 years old, and attracts Hindu devotees from all walks of life. If you make it there in the wee hours of the morning, you might spot a familiar face or two; Bollywood stars and cricketers tend to visit the temple before sunrise in order to get some privacy and beat the crowds.

The Haji Ali Dargah, located on a small islet off the coast of Worli in Mumbai, is another extremely popular place of worship, where devout Muslims throng. If your tastes are earthly rather than spiritual, hop over to the Haji Ali Juice Centre, located a mere 94m away from the mosque’s entrance. With more than just juice on offer, this half-century-old establishment will certainly leave you sated.
